Sameh Nabil

Please End the Suffering of Petra’s Horses, Donkeys, Mules, and Camels

Dear Minister,

If cruelty at Petra can’t be addressed, what hope does the rest of the country have?

Visitors come to Petra to marvel at its ancient monuments and temples, yet the “Lost City” has a dark and ugly side. More than 1,300 horses, donkeys, mules, and camels are forced to carry tourists or pull carriages in the city every day, and they’re suffering terribly.

Handlers viciously beat animals who are simply too spent to go on. When a donkey balked at carrying more tourists after just having finished a tour, the handler kicked him in the stomach so hard that even a bystander recoiled. Although the donkey attempted to escape the onslaught, he was held by a rope and unable to run away. Hundreds of flies swarm around open wounds caused by animals’ bridles being pulled too hard. Observers have seen donkeys with metal chains around their neck that were stained with blood from their injuries. Despite working all day in the scorching heat, animals are deprived of water until they return to the stables – the only source of water in the Petra Archaeological Park.

You don’t have to be a mathematician to calculate the danger that these animals face every day, but even when they aren’t being forced to perform hard labour, they receive little respite, even when weak or injured.

Jordan is among the Middle East’s most liberal countries. Tourists spent $652 million in just January and February of 2017 alone – a 16 per cent increase from the same period last year – putting the kingdom in the company of the world’s tourism leaders.

But all you need to do is go to travel sites such as TripAdvisor.com to see how potential visitors are showing their indignation at this animal abuse by taking their money elsewhere. Clearly, Jordan can afford to ban the use of working horses, donkeys, mules, and camels in Petra and replace them with modern motorized vehicles – and stop driving away compassionate travellers. It’s time that these animals have a better life, one that’s free of suffering. Cruelty to animals shouldn’t be tolerated in any society, especially a modern one grounded in the holiest of teachings.

Please speak up for suffering horses, donkeys, mules, and camels by banning the unnecessary use of animals in Petra.

Sincerely,
